Enjoy crispy, golden baked mozzarella sticks made right in your oven! These healthier, homemade cheese sticks feature a double-coated crust that stays crunchy while the inside remains perfectly gooey. Perfect for snacks, parties, or a light appetizer, they pair beautifully with marinara or your favorite dip.
Ingredients
- 12 mozzarella string cheese sticks
- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- 2 large eggs, beaten
- 2 tablespoons milk
- 1 ½ cups Italian-style breadcrumbs
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1 teaspoon dried oregano
- ½ teaspoon salt
- ½ teaspoon black pepper
- Vegetable oil, for frying
- Marinara sauce, for dipping
Instructions
Cut each mozzarella stick in half to make shorter sticks.
Place flour in one bowl. In a second bowl, whisk together the eggs and milk. In a third bowl, combine breadcrumbs, garlic powder, oregano, salt, and black pepper.
Dredge each mozzarella stick in flour, dip in egg mixture, then coat in the breadcrumb mixture. For a thicker crust, dip it back into the egg and breadcrumbs again.
Place coated sticks on a baking sheet and freeze for at least 1 hour, until solid.
Heat vegetable oil in a deep pot or skillet to 350°F (175°C).
Fry the frozen mozzarella sticks in batches for about 1–2 minutes, or until golden brown and crispy.
Remove and drain on paper towels.
Serve hot with marinara sauce for dipping.
Notes
-
Freezing is essential: It prevents cheese blowouts during baking.
-
Double coat for extra crunch: Don’t skip the second breadcrumb layer.
-
Customize your flavor: Add herbs, spices, or different cheeses.
-
Air fryer friendly: Bake at 370°F for 6–8 minutes in an air fryer.
